The Science of First Impressions: What Your Grooming Says Before You Speak
Making the most out of your first encounters
Meeting someone for the first time plays an important role in any type of relationship. That person’s first impression of you will no doubt form the basis of your future interactions, it can lead to acquaintanceships, friendships, a professional partnership, and even romantic relationships.

Naturally, you will want to put your best foot forward at all times to make sure that a positive perception of you is seen. But why is this important, and what is it about your appearance that makes it important for a first meeting?
In this article, we look at the nature of first impressions, how they appear to others, and how you can improve the initial perception others may form about you.
Why First Impressions Matter
The modern world is extremely fast-paced, and with everything going digital, in-person interactions are all the more important. These short and fleeting moments have the ability to make a lasting impression, and you ultimately want every experience to be a positive one.
It is remarkable how the brief moment in which you meet someone is where they may end up making assumptions that can shape how they view you in their mind. These assumptions are drawn from factors including your appearance, your body language, and even the way you speak.
While being your authentic self is extremely important, judgment from others is impossible to skirt around. This is because the reality is that people have preconceived notions that they base on either experience or stigma that they have learned over the years. This is mainly due to people attributing physical traits to a person’s personality.
In the case of making new friends and dating, first impressions can quickly turn the tide of being a great match into never wanting to meet the person again. The chemistry established can be a turning point for the rest of the relationship. If a connection is not properly made in the beginning, then it can create an awkward tension, which may cause the interest to wither away.
Considerations for first meetings:
- What you know to be a good first impression may not translate well to others, you need to consider cultural differences and show respect when you meet a new person. Certain actions can be considered rude and insensitive. It is best to learn about the person and their cultural norms before the first meeting, this way, you will be able to approach them better.
- Digital footprint also plays a role in how someone shapes their first impression of you. It is also important to create a positive version of yourself online, as certain posts and views being shared online can lead to a conflict in person. This is very important when you are trying to establish professional relationships.
- Be authentic and sincere in your actions. An action like a fake smile can be seen and understood by others, and you may be perceived as rude or unapproachable.
- Social cues are not something everyone understands, like in terms of neurodivergent individuals, which should be accounted for.
Are first impressions based on scientific facts?
The Oxford Academy conducted a study on how the brain perceives people based on aspects like facial appearance and behavior.
The study picked out how the amygdala and prefrontal cortex areas of the brain responded to facial appearance and behavior. The amygdala is known to detect stress, while the prefrontal cortex regulates the body’s reaction to this stress. The study used faces that were either rated as low or high in trustworthiness, and they were paired with varied behavioral information.

In the study, they noted that the amygdala responded more strongly to faces they considered untrustworthy, and the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex tends to respond more to behaviors paired with faces. They noted that the brain distinguishes differently between facial appearance and behavior, the amygdala evaluates trustworthiness, and the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex tends to learn more and make an impression on people.
This study showed that people respond to faces but are able to form a more rounded assessment based on the person’s behavior. This indicates that your behavior in conjunction with your appearance, can affect the impression formed of you.
How to improve your first impressions
Ultimately, your aim should be to strike a balance between your true self and meeting social norms and expectations.
Remember that the context of your meeting with this person matters a lot. It is important to distinguish what is acceptable for a date, a social event like a wedding or party, and what is suitable for a job interview and prepare yourself accordingly.
Improving your appearance
Below are some of the ways you can improve your physical appearance before a first meeting.
Grooming
This is about how you look and making sure that you are well-kept on the first meeting. Think about the situation at hand, and prepare yourself depending on the type of meeting. In any situation, you need to show respect to the person you are meeting, be it a work meeting or a date.
Some of the ways you can improve your grooming to make a positive impact is to make sure that you have neatly styled hair as well as clean and trimmed nails. Facial hair on men has become more acceptable recently, so ensure that beards and mustaches are trimmed and neat as well.
Attire
The way you are dressed and the way you present yourself is how others will cause others to make assumptions about you. These visible aspects of yourself may make others assume that a lack of attention to detail means that you are careless or that you disregard social norms.
To combat this, make sure that your clothes aren’t ill-fitting and that you look presentable and appropriate for the meeting at hand.
Scent
While not always a deciding factor, smelling good, in addition to your appearance, can influence your impact on others. The scent you use is able to influence attraction or friendship. Make sure that the scent you wear is subtle, as you don’t want it to be too overwhelming.
Side note:
Be conscious of what you are wearing and how others may perceive you. If there is anything you may feel self-conscious about, you can work towards improving. This includes working on maintaining your posture and trying out different styles of clothes that make you feel more comfortable and confident. You can also make an appointment with a salon to help you find a style that will suit your natural features.
Improving communication skills
In addition to your appearance, your verbal and non-verbal communication skills also carry a lot of weight in how you are viewed by others.

Tone of voice
This is crucial to how you are received by others. Having a personality that gives off confidence and warmth is key. On the other hand, if you lead your first meetings with indifference, it can change how others perceive you, and it can lead to a negative stepping stone into a relationship.
When talking, make sure that your voice is clear and articulate. Try not to use a lot of slang or mumble when you speak, as you want to show others that you are confident and intelligent. By changing up your pitch and tone of voice can make the conversation more engaging and prevent the conversation from slowing down or becoming boring.
Also, not being afraid to break the ice can be helpful, it shows confidence and helps build a connection.
Tip: Don’t make the conversation about yourself. Be mindful of other participants and shift the conversation to others. It can help others perceive you in a better light.
Body Language
Body language that is open and welcoming is always well received. Smiling, good posture, and maintaining appropriate eye contact are crucial to this. Behavior like fidgeting, crossed arms, or standing hunched can show that you are either nervous or disinterested.
It is important to remember that most people’s faces are expressive, so the expressions you have when you meet someone can help them discern your personality and emotional state.
Not everyone is going to have a good day all of the time, on your off days, where you are inevitably meeting someone for the first time would require you to make some adjustments to your attitude.
Tip: If you have a difficult time schooling your features, then consider recalling a positive experience or something you were excited about. If you are nervous, try relaxing yourself by thinking about something funny or silly which can help with changing up your attitude.
Active listening
This is particularly important when you meet someone, as it creates a good impression and it is a key tool to show that you are genuinely interested in the other person. Be thoughtful, ask questions, and listen properly before speaking. Nodding and mirroring posture can help build connection and rapport.
Tip: While confidence is key, being too confident can come across as being arrogant. Don’t aim to dominate the conversation, and be humble and considerate in your approach.
